Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, the two most glamourous people in the industry come together for Bang Bang which takes its inspiration from Tom Cruise starrer Knight and Day. Of course, there is bound to be loads of romance, lots of action and drama. So, let’s see if the film lives up to all the pre-release hype
Story:
London is the place where the story starts off like in many Bollywood films these days. Omar Zafar (Danny Denzongpa) kills Indian officer Viren Nanda in the hi-security prison and announces a prize to whoever steals the ‘Kohinoor’ for him. In comes Rajveer Nanda (Hrithik Roshan) who actually steals the Kohinoor even before Omar figures out what’s happening. Finally Omar and his men trace Rajveer and try to strike a deal with him in Shimla. But things don’t go as planned and Rajveer gets away with the diamond. From here on, he is on the run
chased by the Indian Secret Service agents and the baddies. Amidst all the confusion, he meets Harleen (Katrina Kaif) who is a small-town girl from Shimla and works as a receptionist in a bank. Even before she knows it, she falls for Rajveer and soon finds herself running across continents with him. But who is Rajveer and why does he steal Kohinoor?
Artistes’ Performances:
More than the story, it is the lead pair that really makes the film worth watching. Despite claiming that it is not one of his best performances, Hrithik makes the film totally watchable. His dance moves are amazing and so are his stunts. He does look a bit tired in a few scenes, but it is Hrithik’s show all the way.
Well, there is little to say about Katrina. She is as good as ever and looks ultra glam. She had done similar roles in the past, but her Harleen is quite appealing and hot. And with Hrithik, she sizzles on screen.
Another plus to the film is Danny Denzongpa who plays Omar. He is seen after a long time and plays the menacing terrorist with ease. Javed Jaffery also gets to play lengthy role as Omar’s aide Hamid Gul. Pawan Malhotra is convincing as ever as the terrorist doubling up as secret agent.
Technical Excellence:
Music by Vishal Sekhar has topped the charts and numbers like the title song Bang Bang and Tu Meri have been in top slots for the past few weeks. Cinematography by Sunil Patel and Vikas Sivaraman is really good as are the brilliant stunt choreography by Andy Armstrong of Amazing Spiderman 2 fame. Abbas Tyrewala writes some interesting dialogues, especially the ones between Hrithik and Katrina. He is not at his brilliant best, but he does keep it simple.
Siddharth Anand who had directed films like Salaam Namaste, Anjaana and Anjaani in the past does not make a spectacular film. But he does get his ingredients right and makes a perfect movie for the holiday season.
Highlights:
Hrithik
Katrina
Music
Action
Drawbacks:
Screenplay
Analysis:
When a film has Hrithik and Katrina in the lead, it is highly unlikely that it can go wrong. And that’s what works in favour of Bang Bang.
It has ample doses of action, sizzling chemistry between the lead pair and hit music. Of course, the story is wafer-thin, but that does not really matter when a film is well-packaged.
So, it does not really matter if the lead pair finds itself pushed ashore in Prague after escaping from a picturesque island or if Hrithik stitches up his bullet wounds as Katrina shines a torch over his wound.
What if he drugs her, strips her and moves her from one awesome location to another (read Shimla, Manali, Abu Dhabi, Prague), it does not really bother you.
It is one of those ‘please leave your logic back home’ kind of films and Siddharth Anand totally exploits the chemistry between Hrithik and Katrina to make it work.
Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day is in a different league, but Siddharth Anand gives a lovable Bollywood action flick with a rich topping of romance and it is an ideal watch for the holiday season. After all, you wouldn’t want to miss Hrithik and Katrina go bang bang.
Bottomline: Action entertainer.
